It was 76 that sponsored the Pac12 Championship games. How do I know? Their gas tanks had hard printed ads on them to buy tickets one year, and they were still there as much as a year after the game. RIP Pac12

All the best extra money in the world doesn’t change the fact God isn’t making an unlimited number of 4 and 5 star DTs. THATS the difference.

It really sounds like Alex is assuming that Brett Yormark is just building up his resume for his next job, which will show all of the initiatives he brough to the Big 12, regardless of if they worked, and I can't say I disagree.

I have no idea how schools would invest their shares of $1 billion in PE money in order to increase revenue, but don't you get the idea that administrators and the media at large thought, "Drew Weatherford played college football, so we can trust him to invest in college sports in a way that would be beneficial to everyone," kind of like the old "Johnny Ruiz is a lawyer, he knows what he's doing and he knows it's all smart and legit," stories of 2021?

I am just waiting for someone to explain why universities, which are some of the largest limited partners in PE funds, would pay Drew Weatherford a fee (and share of any profits) to invest their money in their own athletic departments.

CVC is a bigger name than Weatherford, but if you look at their forays into other sports that didn't make sense for PE, it's very hard to see this going any better. Their MO is get control of the assets and figure it out later, but universities ain't handing over the keys.

In the end, we're really just talking about a couple of schools that lack alumni wealth, and, perhaps coincidentally, investors more seasoned than Weatherford in positions of governance. No AD has the incentive to shoot it down entirely, and secretly a bunch are hoping someone like FSU does it just so they can watch how it plays out.

I actually think that, considering the journalists who have written about PE investments, such as Ross Dellenger, Pete Thamel, and Dennis Dodd, that this story has been very poorly covered. I'm not sure you write about the "what" of private equity without finding out the "how," as in how does this work in practice. I understand how investing in pro sports makes sense, you dump $500 million into the NY Giants, you sell in 5 years for $1 billion. I legitimately have no idea how a schools takes a $62.5 million windfall and invests it in a way that increases revenue by 20%.

I would like to hear any of those journalists attempt to explain live on the air what the term private equity means.

And, why it’s so important they continue to use the term when anyone with passing familiarity can see it does not apply.

UNAM has a super strong gridiron history too. Would absolutely love to see them field a team in the big 12 or play an exhibition at the Olympic stadium m. Interestingly they also have a fully professional soccer team!
