I'd argue Maryland doesn't need to "knock off an elite opponent" as much as it needs to "cut down on the number of really stupid losses." last year there were two (to Illinois and Northwestern), if they pull those out they go into the bowl season with 9 wins.

Sure? But I think if you can consistently win between 8-10 games and not beat any of the big time teams in the conference, that basically just makes you Penn State, and I think people would be okay with that (I definitely know I'd be).
Same, but I think winning just one of these bigguns would really change the tenor of conversation in a way that even two or three 9-3s wouldn't. Not mutually exclusive though.

I think to get people excited, they have to win a big one. That's just my read of the fanbase.
