Sorry if it's not for you. All I will add: We didn't let that go unchallenged, and I hope the interview is a window into how someone with power in the sport approaches their work.
I chuckled when he mentioned Notre Dame and the Fiesta Bowl, meaning he was likely an instrument of screwing Virginia Tech out of the Fiesta in favor of the overmatched Irish who got set of fire by Oregon State if memory serves, leaving Michael Vick to play his last game against Clemson in the Gator. Not that I have a grudge about any of that specifically.
He is also speaking for what signs his checks. Hard to criticize that. Look at Bill Hancock. He was head of the BCS so he spoke against playoff, the he’s hired for the CFP and loves a playoff.
I don't actually think there is anything wrong with the bowl system, and I understand Carparelli promoting the bowls, but does anyone really think that Indiana should actually play Notre Dame in Miami or something because TCU Michigan looked cool?
I would have liked to hear Nick address what I think is the biggest reason that players opt out, and it is the calendar, but not because the bowls are after the portal opening. In a sport where teams play every week all season, most bowl teams play a game November 30th, and then wait a month to play again. I wouldn't play either. There are 8 games on December 28th? That's 16 teams that need to hang around for 4 weeks to play another game.
It’s a special kind of person who, in the same breath, complains that athletes need to grow up - “nobody’s just going to give you something” - AND complains that leaders aren’t providing athletes with enough support.
Glad you liked it. Tbh that was a big reason for my interest in doing it. I think you are not the only person who did not know this was even a job, or that there was even a bowl lobbying group.
It's funny that the guy who negotiated all of Under Armour's terrible football deals now has this job. The whole system really is just one giant boondoggle.
Thanks for this episode, guys. I still think the biggest issue with bowls are the conference tie-ins. They sometimes create good matchups but oftentimes don’t. I get why the tie-ins exist (historically and financially) but maybe if there was a better way of getting more interesting matchups they wouldn’t feel so outdated.
I don’t know if there is really a way to fix this but I think the tie-ins make for some terrible football.
Really appreciate you Alex on the immediate smashback on the “not working hard”. I think everyone over 55 needs to realize we did not get handed the same situation that they did. (I’m over 40 fwiw)
Not really a comment on this episode but I would be interested to hear you guys dig in on what the hell happened with catapult. I am guessing OSU did it. GO BLUE.
Love that he touches on buyouts and non competes. Would love to see schools that invest millions into their programs just refuse to accept buyout money when a player tries to leave. Would be hilarious. So many of these guys are going to find out how valuable they are not.
Ooh a new episode on bowl season! How exciting!
*Guest immediately calls young people lazy and unmotivated. Criticizes athlete's for protecting their bodies and future from an exhibition game*
Yeah, maybe I'll pass on this one.

Your reply challenging him was very appreciated
I agree, he lost me pretty quick. I did finish the episode since it was short but “head of bowl games likes bowl games” pretty much sums it up.
My favorite part was he said the fiesta was his favorite bowl game to work with. I’d like to see this guy read death to the BCS

Props on this interview. Didn’t even know this was a position. Felt like you guys did a good job. Maybe some ADs getting interviewed?

UNLV feels this definitely. Kind of a bummer having a great season and you play Cal.

Good interview. However, as an Alabamian who knows better, please do not try to sell me on visiting Montgomery.
