I went to a Nas show at Red Rocks a few years ago and the median age was in the 20s. As far as I can tell, Illmatic remains the #1 album people use to demarcate themselves as hip hop heads

I love em both but the "Illmatic" is "Petsounds" or whatever is just bullshit. It is a great album but its overrated. Jay-Z won, it is sad but it is true. He went on the marry Beyonce, make at least 2 other albums that are better or as good as "Illmatic" while the next year Nas was "Oochy wallying" with Horse and those guys.

Idk, last year I was trying to expose my girlfriend to hip-hop so I made a playlist of what I considered to be the hip hop canon in chronological order. As soon as she heard N.Y. State of Mind she immediately said it seemed revolutionary compared to everything that came before it. I’m not saying anything about the rest of Nas’s discography, nor their lives, but I do genuinely think the reverence of Illmatic is correct.

No worries, I don’t think you came off as a hater either. I don’t have enough of a rounded music knowledge to know about half those other takes, but will give them some spins. I mostly just made this for me and people I know, so I won’t pretend it’s authoritative, but am open to any suggestions or like timeline errors.

Share the playlist. Sorry to come off as a hater. It is a great album just not at the top for me. I like Sunvolt more than Wilco, Faceoff more than SpeakerBoxx, and Trap or Die more than the Carter IV.

Michigan fan here - I am hedging my bets for Monday but you bet your bottom dollar if OSU wins, I am getting a scotch glass with all the scores of OSU’s natty run on there that includes: Michigan 13, OSU 10 for the comedy.
