Dead Letters, Nebraska: The Video (Welcome to Relaunch Week!)
Welcome back to football season. Let's celebrate.
Welcome to Split Zone Duo RELAUNCH WEEK 2024. We like to kick off every season with a week of really loading up on podcasts and other cool stuff, and that time has come.
Today we’re releasing the first original video we’ve ever made. It’s a special twist on our Dead Letters miniseries, where we explain the history of bad things happening to great college football programs. This video is about the last 60-some years of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The story will be familiar to subscribers who have listened to our long audio history of Nebraska from 2022, but we’ve added a lot. Watch and subscribe (for free!) on YouTube:
Are we pivoting to video? Lol no. We wanted to do something special this offseason, and we thought video was a great fit for this type of story. (It’s about 14 minutes, not two hours.) Let us know what you think, and we’re very eager to read your ideas. If you all like this kind of thing, we might make more!
The SZD Relaunch Week schedule
Tuesday: The 2024 SEC preview show
Wednesday: Steven Godfrey’s long-awaited ode to the majesty of Michigan football and the Rose Bowl. (At least we think. Richard and I have no idea what he’s gonna say on this thing. We’re told there is a special guest.)
Thursday: Part 2 of Richard’s “State of the State of Florida” series, focusing on how things are going in South Florida. Here’s Part 1 for paid subscribers.
Friday: Coach Gossip returns with a special Godfrey Single Wing. He answers subscriber questions about the state of the coaching carousel entering the season. There’s a lot to go over.
Schedule is subject to change at the whims of the podcast gods.
Yep, it’s also a subscription drive!
If you like this podcast, the reason it exists is because people pay for it. We are lucky to have a few amazing sponsors, but the vast majority of our money comes from the people who pay $10 a month or $110 a year.
What do we do with that money? First, we buy luxury yachts and Monaco real estate. But after that, we put it it back into the show: production costs, travel, platform and payment fees, and time that we spend making SZD instead of doing other work. This week, for example, we’ve tried something fun with the Nebraska video, because we think you and potential future listeners will love it. Your subscriptions paid for an editor, recording equipment, and producer Ryan Nanni (whose salary demands were just extraordinary).
Paying subscribers get a lot!
We’ve unlocked a handful of subscriber favorites so that free subscribers can see what they’re all about. Paying subscribers will already be familiar with these shows, and they’ll get more like them in the future!
Our catalog of audio Dead Letters episodes
In these shows, Alex and historians dig into the history of very bad things happening to very good college football programs.
Long-form interviews
Godfrey just interviewed Ben Haumiller, EA Sports’ principal game designer for college football (and a longtime SZD subscriber, by the way)
Scheme School, an audio breakdown of the games within the game
Richard leads regular chats with Xs-and-Os experts, and they accessibly break down big trends and interesting players and teams.
In-depth reaction to big news events
It’s not just Emergency Shows after big news. We take deep dives into what comes next after something earth-shaking happens in CFB. Like the time A&M tried to hire Kentucky’s coach until … something changed.
We really appreciate you.
Let’s have a great season. Consider us relaunched.
