I was in Wyoming twice this past year, desolate sure, but so is that whole region! Im with Alex on this one. I’d been wondering for a while when they’d hit their next level based on Bohl’s reputation
Other notes on Avalos. Best receiver transferred mid-season leaving his team with what was heavily rumored to be internal disputes with the head coach. Avalos is said to have been the leading man on the QB-rotation which was nonsensical and insulting to the players. At one point before the Fresno game, he said that Taylen Green was the starter for the team. Taylen got the first snap for the game and then was benched for the rest of the game. He refused to provide clarity on the situation. This offense didn't know who would be leading it.
It is also heavily rumored that he was an obsessive micro-manager of his staff. The prevailing sentiment is that Koetter saved his season in 2022. There is a story that came out in 2022 where Koetter had to tell Avalos to "get the f*** out of his meeting."
General opinion in Boise is once a bronco, always a bronco, but he probably needed to get his head coach experience at a smaller school first.
Also Avalos fired (or tried to fire)an athletic department employee, apparently without approval from the school, and also apparently because the employee told Avalos that he’d lost the locker room. That seemed to be the final straw
Longtime listener! Boise talk was mostly accurate but some context on Avalos.
The season leading up to his firing:
-Losing 56-20 to UW. Look, you never want to to smacked by 30+ but you could stomach it at the time and even more so as the season progressed and what UW was.
-Losing on a field goal to UCF. Again, disappointing but could stomach it.
-Losing at Memphis was the beginning of the turn. Boise had a 17-0 lead. Avalos made questionable decisions and began to totally mismanage a QB situation.
-Losing to Fresno the poor management of the QB situation came to a head. Boise had an unacceptable special teams error (a reoccurring issue of the Avalos era) at the end of the first half that drastically altered the feel of the game.
-Losing to CSU was the nail in the coffin. Boise was up by 20 with 7 minutes left and totally collapsed losing on a hail mary to a team that had never beat them.
Recently, I drove through Wyoming. Beautiful, but desolate. I felt like I was the only person for miles. I do recommend a drive through the state, Alex!
